6 Things You Can Do to Take Care of Yourself in a Toxic Workplace

Recently I scrolled through Reddit and was completely shocked by the number of concerns about toxic work environments. Within 15 mins I observed a number of issues citing workplace bullying, harassment, discrimination, and burnout. Given the amount of time spent at work for most of us, it’s of the utmost importance for us to work on dealing with these issues.

Here are my thoughts on strategies to help…

  • Focus on what you can control.

I know your coworker not putting in as much effort as you is frustrating. However, there are limits to what YOU can do. After all you can’t MAKE anyone do anything. You can only control what is within you. Your thoughts, your actions, the effort you put into your work, your energy. These are all your responsibility. Not your coworkers’ laziness.  Post affirmations around your work area to help YOU stay focused and engaged in a positive mindset even though there is chaos around you.

  • Set boundaries.

Don’t let toxic coworkers or bosses bring you down.  Set boundaries and stick to them.  Disengage from any messy office gossip if you are connected to it.  If someone is being disrespectful towards you or others Try saying, “I’d rather you not speak to me in that way.  Instead you may speak to me __(describe what’s acceptable here)_____.”

  • Take time off when needed or just take a break when you need it.

Pay attention to your emotional state and notice when you are experiencing more frustration, irritability, or just not wanting to go to work. This is a sign that you need a break!  It’s important to step away from the negativity and give yourself some time to recharge.  During your work day if you need a break try going for a walk, grabbing a coffee, or just sitting in a quiet space for a few minutes.

  • Consider what you can do about your situation.

If looking for other employment is an option begin doing so. If transferring to another department or position is an option you should consider this as well.

  • Talk to your manager or Human Resources Manager about the issues you are experiencing.

Most HR directors are trained in conflict resolution and should be able to help you.  If your HR representative is unhelpful, you may want to speak to a therapist.

  • And as always practice daily self care!

Having a good self care routine is essential to overall health and wellness.

Remember, you deserve to work in a positive and healthy environment.  Don’t let a toxic workplace bring you down!

The bottom line is that you and your emotional health are important.
